Boston Scientific's Atlantis IVUS


September 15, 2010 – A high-definition intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) system will be demonstrated during the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) 2010 symposium Sept. 21-25 in Washington, D.C.

Silicon Valley Medical Instruments (SVMI) will demonstrate its high-definition IVUS system, which integrates a powerful imaging engine with a small profile and low cost. The company said its system offers easier and faster image interpretation associated with higher frequency operation and touchscreen operation.

Gary Mintz, M.D., from Columbia University in New York recently commented that the images were “stunning.”

Clinical studies with the SVMI system are planned outside the United States sites in early 2011. The company’s products utilize a Linux-based operating system that, in conjunction with state-of-the-art electronic components, provides improvements in system speed and processing power compared to current IVUS products. An ultra-high resolution touchscreen is utilized for image display and measurement interaction, providing ultimate user convenience.

IVUS image quality, especially resolution, has improved very little since its commercial introduction in the early 1990s. This has led to increased cardiologist interest in alternative imaging modalities, including optical coherence tomography (OCT) and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). SVMI said its lower-cost, high-definition IVUS may obviate the need for OCT and other light-based intravascular imaging technologies.

However, the company designed its system to easily integrate OCT, enabling a future combination IVUS/OCT. The company is also developing IVUS products for future catheter-based image guidance of structural heart, electrophysiology and other cardiovascular procedures.

SVMI is seeking a top-tier business partner with strong international marketing and sales capability. The company hopes such a partnership will facilitate rapid IVUS market penetration.
