Kip McMillan, CEO of Diversified Radiology of Colorado P.C.

This case study shows how Diversified Radiology of Colorado P.C. uses Intelerad’s InteleOne distributed radiology solution to leverage automation, increase efficiency and reduce turnaround time.

Founded by a single doctor in 1927, Diversified Radiology of Colorado (DRC) today includes more than 55 radiologists, serving 12 hospitals and more than 25 clinics around the state.

Members of the practice focus exclusively on their individual radiology specialties, including neuro, cardiac, pediatric, nuclear/positron emission tomography (PET) and musculoskeletal imaging. This enables them to deliver the most qualified and informed interpretations. While central to the DRC business model, this approach creates unique business challenges.

Historically, DRC’s sub-specialty emphasis has entailed a manual and laborious study routing process. The complexity of that process, and the wide variety of PACS solutions in use at the various facilities DRC serves – each with its own worklist and viewer, combined to create a very complicated and inefficient workflow. Also, in 2003, the practice decided to outsource the night reading business to a service that could more efficiently maintain the sub-specialty focus.

These business challenges began to limit DRC’s opportunities for growth. To address this, in 2009 DRC turned to the InteleOne solution from Intelerad. InteleOne consolidates image and patient data from multiple picture archiving and communications systems (PACS) and radiology information systems (RIS) systems into a streamlined, single workflow solution. It allows direct access to all studies and reports, including priors, available across the entire network.

Today, using InteleOne, DRC radiologists benefit from a single sign-on, a universal worklist, a single Web-based viewer and an integrated voice recognition system.

“InteleOne’s single reading environment and single voice recognition solution adds a minimum of 20 percent efficiency to the doctor’s day,” said DRC Chief Executive Officer Kip McMillan.
