October 30, 2012 — Civco Medical Solutions announced it has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the Protura robotic patient positioning system integration with the AlignRT 3-D imaging system. The FDA also granted approval to integrate the system with Elekta's motion management interface.

Protura's ability to interface with existing image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) -enabled linacs supports sub-millimeter patient positioning and corrections with six degrees of freedom (DOF). The integration with Elekta provides automatic population of pedestal location, automated patient information transfer from Elekta's MOSAIQ radiation oncology information system and patient shift data from Elekta's XVI imaging system.

"We are pleased to announce clearance to market the newest release of Protura integrated with the Elekta motion management interface," said Nat Geissel, senior vice president and general manager of Civco’s radiation oncology division. "This release allows users to improve efficiencies in their clinical workflow and deliver sub-millimeter patient positioning accuracy."

The Protura robotic patient positioning system is now up and running clinically at Arnhems Radiotherapeutisch Instituute (ARTI), the Netherlands, making the clinic the first to benefit from the integration. "If you integrate the 6D robotic couch with the rest of your equipment, you have less cone beam scans," said Kasper Pasma, ARTI medical physicist. "One cone beam scan for each fraction is sufficient to do it right."

"We are pleased to announce clearance to market the newest release of Protura integrated with VisionRT," added Geissel. "This release allows Protura to seamlessly integrate with the AlignRT 3D surface imaging solution from VisionRT."

Protura's ability to interface with existing IGRT-enabled interfaces supports sub-millimenter patient positioning and corrections with six DOF. This integration allows the AlignRT user to apply calculated translation and rotational shifts automatically to the Protura system from within the simple and intuitive AlignRT interface. The Protura system provides automated, consistent and accurate six DOF patient alignment.
