May 11, 2011 – The American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) will host its 22nd Annual Scientific Sessions: The Patient the Image – The Role of Cardiovascular Ultrasound in Clinical Decision Making (ASE 2011), June 11-14 at the Palais des Congres de Montreal in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

ASE 2011 promises education, stimulation and connection through a variety of sessions, workshops and special events. More than 300 new research abstracts on cardiovascular (CV) ultrasound advances will be presented at and highlighted in speaker presentations throughout the meeting. In addition, key practice updates for any physician using echo will be presented, focusing on adherence to guidelines, lab management and ethics in the clinical setting.

Practitioners from 38 countries have already registered to take advantage of the world-renowned faculty. ASE is proud to feature prominent speakers from the European Society of Echocardiography and Japanese Society of Echocardiography, as well as faculty from all of the major U.S. medical institutions, including: Cleveland Clinic, Duke University, Mayo Clinic, Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center, Massachusetts General Hospital and University of Chicago.

Faculty from these institutions will present new research and techniques on a variety of subjects including, but not limited to: interventional cardiology, fundamental imaging, vascular imaging and case-based learning. Participants will learn the most up-to-date techniques in: strain rate imaging, multimodality assessment of the difficult patient, left ventricular assistive devices and cardiac resynchronization therapy.

ASE 2011 also features a track specifically designed for cardiac sonographers, which contains a wide variety of topics, including "TEE for the sonographer" and a "Global Educator's Summit."

The ASE 2011 Program was developed by Susan E. Wiegers, M.D., FACC, FASE, who is director, clinical echocardiography; co-director, cardiovascular fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania; and the 2007 winner of ASE's highest teaching award, the Richard Popp Excellence in Teaching Award. The program was designed to provide instruction in cardiovascular ultrasound from basic to advanced levels.

ASE 2011 will also feature an address by Gov. Howard Dean, M.D., former governor of Vermont, former chair of the Democratic National Committee, and former presidential candidate. His topic of discussion is entitled "Health Care Reform: What It Means To Patients as Well as Physicians."

In honor of the host city of Montreal, ASE has partnered with the Jewish General Hospital to host a full-day symposium presented in French Saturday, June 11. This symposium will highlight many of the prominent physicians and sonographers from Quebec's four medical faculties, as well as internationally renowned speakers from France, Belgium, and other countries of “le monde francophone,” or the French-speaking world. A variety of topics will be explored, including valvular heart disease, left ventricular systolic and diastolic function, and the right heart.
