February 13, 2024 — The American College of Radiology (ACR) has announced that Mark Alson, MD, FACR, RCC, was presented this year’s American Medical Association (AMA) Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Burgess Gordon Memorial Award. The award recognizes the CPT advisor who: demonstrates vast knowledge of the full range of CPT issues beyond their specialty area; responds completely and promptly to Advisor Response forms on the CPT website; provides technical support to users of CPT; serves as an advocate for the CPT process; and has made outstanding contributions to the CPT process. The presentation took place at the AMA’s CPT/Health Care Professionals Advisory Committee Annual February Meeting in San Diego, CA, according to a Feb. 9 ACR news summary.

Alson's involvement with ACR  includes serving as its CPT Lead Advisor to the CPT Editorial Panel, as well as chairing the Economics Committee on Coding and Nomenclature. Additionally, Alson is an editorial board member of the joint AMA/ACR coding publication Clinical Examples in Radiology, and previously served as the ACR Liaison on the Radiology Coding Certification Board (RCCB). The ACR announcement also expressed appreciation to Alson for his continuous efforts and contributions on behalf of radiologists.

He also served as a guest reviewer of the RCC exam to ensure it was kept up-to-date and met all the requirements of the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. The RCCB is the organization responsible for the establishment and maintenance of the only radiology-specific coding certification examination.

Alson is founding member of Sierra Imaging Associates Medical Group, PC, in Fresno, CA, having served as president of the group since 2004, and being involved in all aspects of women’s imaging, including breast imaging and intervention, obstetrical ultrasound, CT, MRI, and oncology imaging.
