October 6, 2022 ‑— Ahead of the 64th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), set for October 23-26, in San Antonio, TX, additional details on keynote addresses, distinguished awards and late-breaking abstracts are being provided by program planners.
Keynote Speakers Shine Spotlight on AI & EI
According to pre-event information from ASTRO on its 2022 Annual Meeting, an outstanding line-up of speakers and topics has been announced, including two dynamic keynote speakers focused on the meeting theme of AI & EI: Caring for the Patient in a Wireless World, in an effort to inform the bigger picture of the rapidly changing health care environment beyond radiation oncology.
Ruha Benjamin, PhD, professor, Department of African American Studies, Director of Graduate Affairs at Princeton University, will present a keynote address on Monday, Oct. 24 at 9:15 a.m. Dr. Benjamin’s specialty is in the interdisciplinary study of science, medicine and technology, race-ethnicity and gender, as well as knowledge and power. In “Race to the Future? Reimagining the Default Settings of Technology & Society,” she will discuss themes outlined in her book, Race After Technology, and include the social dimensions of data science, discriminatory design in technology, and how digital tools can replicate existing hierarchies and propagate racist policies. She has authored multiple books, book chapters and articles.
Richard Deming, MD, serves as Medical Director at MercyOne Des Moines Cancer Center. He is a radiation oncology specialist with over 41 years of experience, and founder of Above and Beyond Cancer Foundation. In his keynote address on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 9:15 a.m., he will share his and his patients’ experience with the foundation, which takes cancer survivors and their families on international adventures to places like the Mount Everest Base Camp at the top of Mount Kilamanjaro.
“Gold Medal” and Inaugural “ASTRO Mentorship” Awards
The 2022 ASTRO Gold Medalists have been announced, and will be honored during the Oct. 25 Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony. The Gold Medalists are: Tim R. Williams, MD, FASTRO; and Wendell Lutz, PhD. Dr. Williams is the Medical Director at South Florida Proton Therapy Institute, and a former ASTRO president and chair. Lutz is a medical physicist who is known for his pioneering effort in the development of a linac-based stereotactic radiosurgery system, as well as other devices which have been adopted worldwide for quality assurance in radiation therapy.
Two members of ASTRO have been selected to receive its inaugural ASTRO Mentorship Award. According to the pre-event summary, this award recognizes extraordinary role models in radiation oncology who have excelled as mentors by demonstrating outstanding commitment to the professional development of their mentees as clinicians, educators and researchers. ASTRO will recognize the two recipients of that award at the Awards Ceremony on October 25. They are: Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil, FASTRO, University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI; and Charles Thomas Jr., MD, FASTRO, Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
Late-Breaking Abstracts
In addition to the poster presentations and large number of presentations, the following Special Scientific Sessions will be presented on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 2:30 p.m. in the Hemisfair Ballroom/C2/C3 of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. ASTRO has also gathered brief, informative presenter videos, available on the website, offering insights into the topics scheduled throughout the Annual Meeting.
