Explore, Invent and Transform With ITN at RSNA 2017

Explore. Invent. Transform. This is the theme for the Radiological Society of North America’s (RSNA) 103rd meeting and scientific assembly, and this year invites attendees to investigate and advance radiology through innovation as a means of creating positive impact on patient care. The meeting will take place at Chicago’s McCormick Place from Nov. 26 to Dec. 1, 2017.

Special Interest topics at RSNA 2017 will include dementia, the radiology experience from the patient’s perspective, translating quantitative imaging research to clinical practice, radiofrequency ablation in combination with immunotherapy, and the use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound.

New This Year

At the 2017 annual meeting, RSNA will introduce a new Machine Learning Showcase on the exhibit floor. The Machine Learning Showcase, sponsored by Carestream Health, Google Cloud and Zebra Medical Vision, was designed to be a destination for attendees to connect with companies and see the latest in machine learning and artificial intelligence software and products. It will provide unique opportunities to learn more about how these new technologies can help support their business practices.

The FastPass can be found at www.rsnafastpass.com, and features many of the new systems and products being introduced on this year’s show floor. Some of these systems are also featured in this issue beginning on page 16 in the RSNA Show Preview section.

Also new at RSNA 2017 is the Fast 5 Session. This new session will feature five topics presented by five speakers in five minutes each. Topics being discussed will include each speaker’s unique ideas about topics that inspire them to explore, invent and transform medical imaging. The Fast 5 will take place on Thursday, Nov. 30, at 1:30 p.m.

Cyberattacks on healthcare institutions as well as data breaches regularly make headlines as various individuals and entities seek to use this information for their own personal gain. To date, providers of all specialties — including radiology — have had trouble defending themselves against these invasions, and they must improve if they hope to maintain the trust of their patients. To help people better understand what is needed to deter these attacks, RSNA has created a new cybersecurity session this year, developed by the Medical Imaging and Technical Alliance (MITA) with speakers from both MITA and the FDA. More information on cyberattacks can also be found in the article “Building a Cybersecurity Team in Radiology” on page 38 of this issue.
