Upgrades include new enterprise image viewer, lesion management and mammography modules

University of Iowa Health Care Expands Carestream Clinical Collaboration Platform Capabilities

September 28, 2017 — University of Iowa Health Care recently purchased Carestream’s Vue Motion enterprise viewer, lesion management and mammography/tomography software to augment the capabilities of its existing Carestream Clinical Collaboration Platform.

“We need a fully featured enterprise viewer that can support rapid, reliable image access by the thousands of physicians we serve. This new viewer will be integrated with our Epic EMR [electronic medical record] to deliver images to University of Iowa clinicians, referring physicians and other clinicians as well as patients,” said Maia Hightower, M.D., chief medical information officer and clinical assistant professor, University of Iowa Health Care.

Carestream’s Vue Archive module stores images from multiple applications, and a backup Carestream data center manages images during system upgrades and provides redundancy to help ensure continuous uptime.

“Our organization is transferring additional data onto the Clinical Collaboration Platform’s Vue Archive module to deliver easy access to users and better leverage this investment. This allows us to reduce operating costs while ensuring responsive service to users,” Hightower added.

The healthcare system also is implementing Carestream’s lesion management application to help enhance assessment of oncology patients with quantitative measurements, bookmarking and comparisons over time to aid oncologists’ diagnostic and treatment decision making.

Adding Carestream’s mammography/tomography module will equip physicians to read these images on picture archiving and communication system (PACS) workstations and eliminate use of standalone mammography workstations.

The University of Iowa Health Care’s Vue Archive enterprise repository stores radiology images, cardiology catheterization images from a dedicated cardio PACS and echo images from a separate PACS. It maintains both a production data center and a backup data center to supply redundancy and ensure access to patient data.
