Universal viewer equips more than 800 referring physicians with imaging data that enables timely treatment decisions

Reno Diagnostic Centers Installs Carestream Clinical Collaboration Platform

April 12, 2017 — Reno Diagnostic Centers (RDC) in Reno, Nev., recently expanded its radiology picture archiving and communication system (PACS) to the latest version of Carestream’s Clinical Collaboration Platform. This enterprise imaging management solution enables enhanced productivity for radiologists, collaboration with referring physicians and streamlined system management.

Carestream’s Vue Motion universal viewer makes imaging studies available in seconds to more than 800 referring physicians. The imaging center group also upgraded its Vue Archive to deliver faster access speeds.

“We implemented new workstations throughout our facilities and eliminated standalone workstations for mammography, PET [positron emission tomography] and CT [computed tomography]. We now use 8.8 megapixel monitors on all radiologists’ workstations, at half the cost of our previous workstations,” said Ronald Milbank, director of information technology, Reno Diagnostic Centers.

Carestream continues to offer a comprehensive portfolio of reading tools that optimizes efficiency for radiologists and delivers superior exam report content, he added. “The high-performance workstations we use at RDC offer advanced graphics capabilities and can rapidly load extremely large image files, which helps boost radiologists’ productivity. And due to the affordable price, we were able to upgrade workstations at radiologists’ homes to enhance after-hours response times.”

Equipping referring physicians with convenient electronic access to patient images is also essential. More than 800 physicians have access to patient images using the Vue Motion universal viewer, according to Milbank. “This viewer provides onsite and offsite physicians with rapid and secure access to imaging studies on their mobile devices so they can make timely diagnostic and treatment decisions.”

Reno Diagnostic Centers also installed next-generation storage technology that includes real-time backup for all data. Carestream’s Vue Archive stores 19 months of images on one storage area network (SAN) device using SSD-chip hard drives for primary storage. This technology delivers access to the past 12 months of imaging studies in as little as one to two seconds. Older files are stored on another SAN with spinning drives. The Vue Archive includes 13 modalities and 17 years of imaging data.

Reno Diagnostic Centers has two imaging centers in Reno. Radiologists read imaging exams at both centers and also read for five unaffiliated hospitals and clinics. Total reading volume at RDC is 74,000 imaging exams a year.
