Fourth installation in Shriners Hospitals for Children system

EOS Imaging Shriners Hospital Orthopedic CT Systems

March 3, 2014 — The EOS imaging system will be installed at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Philadelphia. This is the fourth installation within the Shriners Hospitals for Children system, a group of hospitals focused on caring for children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions and other specialty healthcare.

The Philadelphia Shriners Hospital treats more than 17,000 patients per year, with 68 percent of these patients treated for spinal conditions that require frequent imaging to track treatment progression.  Scoliosis in particular requires regular screening over the course of many years of treatment, increasing exposure to harmful levels of radiation that may increase the likelihood of developing cancer in later years.

The EOS system provides full-body images of patients in a natural standing or seated position in both 2-D and 3-D. The system also delivers a radiation dose that has been measured to be nine times lower than that of computed radiography X-ray, and 20 times lower than basic CT scans. This is in accordance with the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle of radiation reduction.
