January 23, 2014 — New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has signed the state’s breast density inform/insurance bill (S792) into law. New Jersey becomes the 14th state to enact and raises to 48 percent the number of American women living in states with mandatory breast density notification.
The law requires insurers to cover breast evaluations and other additional medically necessary testing under certain circumstances and requires certain mammogram reports to contain information on breast density.
On the federal regulatory level, a Breast Density Reporting amendment to the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) is scheduled to be issued as a "Notice of Proposed Rulemaking" in 2014. On the federal legislative front, Reps. DeLauro (CT) and Israel (NY) have introduced The Breast Density and Mammography Reporting Act of 2013 (HR 3404).
Other states with enacted breast density inform laws include Conn., Texas, Va., N.Y., Calif., Hawaii, Md., Tenn., Ala., Nev., Ore., N.C., Pa. and N.J.
