ASRT Introduces Breast Imaging Educational Series

September 6, 2012 — The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) launched its new online breast imaging educational series, Breast Imaging Basics: The Series. The 10-module interactive series provides medical imaging professionals and students with a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of breast imaging. 

Breast Imaging Basics features illustrations and easy-to-understand animations that engage participants and reinforce key concepts. The modules cover a broad range of topics including the technical aspects of breast imaging equipment and instrumentation, identification of common pathologies and guidelines to improve image quality.

“Our goal for the product is to provide mammographers and students with the core information they need to understand breast imaging,” said Myke Kudlas, M.Ed., R.T.(R)(QM), ASRT chief academic officer. “With more than 50,000 registered mammographers in the country, and a number of individuals interested in entering the practice area, we’re confident that the series will help prepare them for their roles.”

In addition to highlighting the technical aspects and common pathologies of breast imaging, the series includes information about the basic principles of breast ultrasound and explores the theory and physics behind producing, acquiring and displaying digital mammograms.

The for-credit series includes 10 modules, transcripts and a free practice test. Individuals also can purchase modules separately and earn at least 1 Category A or A+ continuing education (CE) credit for each module.

Participants who successfully complete all 10 modules will earn 15 CE credits and will receive a document from the ASRT recognizing their achievement and a free positioning guide they can use at work. In addition, successful completion of the modules will help radiologic technologists meet the CE requirements established by the Mammography Quality Standards Act.

The ASRT also offers a non-CE credit institutional version for educators and managers who would like to use the series as an educational tool. The package includes 10 modules, a test bank, an image library, a PDF of the positioning guide, transcripts and license for unlimited use in training or the classroom.
