August 16, 2011 — Vital Images Inc. received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for VitreaView, a new universal viewer providing uniform access to all images within patient imaging. VitreaView is designed for access through the electronic medical record (EMR), electronic health record (EHR) and health information exchange (HIE). Vital Images is a Toshiba Medical Systems Group company.
The software utilizes next generation technology for image distribution through a zero-footprint and zero download viewing solution. Users can employ Web-enabled devices, including Windows or Mac-based systems, for review of DICOM and non-DICOM medical images. This gives clinicians unrestricted access through the EMR, EHR or HIE to all patient imaging.
“CRL provides radiology services to a large variety of facilities in a multi-state region. Our need to deliver patient imaging in context with reports via the Web is critical,” said Norman Arslanlar, M.D., at CRL Imaging. “During our validation of VitreaView, we found that it gives us these abilities and further enables CRL to provide our referring physicians with enhanced communication so they may in turn treat their patients more efficiently.”
Additionally, IT administrators can leverage virtualization for deployment along with VitreaView’s ability to manage access to multiple databases, thus providing a universal imaging layer at an enterprise level.
The system is also designed to eliminate the need to integrate disparate image viewing portals, substituting a single, standardized imaging layer for referring clinicians. This allows administrators to move away from managing disparate departmental imaging solutions and provide access through a consolidated universal viewer.
