July 15, 2011 — The Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine' (SIIM)’s annual meeting wrapped up last month in Washington D.C., with a 10 percent increase in professional attendance and an exhibit hall bustling with vendor and attendee interaction and learning.

The educational program provided heightened opportunities for learning and exchange of imaging informatics essentials, trends, and innovations. This year's theme, "Reforming Healthcare Through Informatics: Challenges to Solutions," reflected the pressing needs of the imaging informatics community and was addressed by Keith J. Dreyer, D.O., Ph.D., FSIIM in the 2011 Dwyer general session on meaningful use. The hot topic session, "MU for Me and You," chaired by Bradley J. Erickson, M.D., Ph.D., FSIIM, delved into the topic further. Current challenges were thoroughly explored and SIIM attendees were encouraged to act on these challenges through the use of imaging informatics technology and tools.

New this year, the world of SIIM and imaging informatics education is accessible through the SIIM Live Learning Center – a brand new educational portal with the 2011 general sessions, featuring educational and hot topic sessions available as audio synchronized PowerPoint presentations. Sessions can be downloaded and listened to in MP3 format on mobile devices for education on the go. The opening general session talk of Matthew Morgan, M.D., is the preview presentation of the SIIM Live Learning. The Dreyer and Erickson meaningful use sessions are both available in the SIIM Live Learning Center and are part of the three general sessions, nine educational sessions and six hot topic sessions available online.

The SIIM 2011 Live Learning Center also includes preview presentations of the 2011 SIIM Membership Meeting and Fellows Induction. SIIM members elected new officers and directors at the annual meeting and terms began July 1, 2011.  J. Raymond Geis, M.D., is the new chair-elect of SIIM; and Steve G. Langer, Ph.D., Eliot L. Siegel, M.D., and Donald K. Dennison were elected directors-at-large (2011-2014).

The College of SIIM Fellows inducted a new fellow during the meeting. David L. Weiss, M.D., was recognized for his significant contributions in advancing the field of imaging informatics.

The SIIM 2012 annual meeting takes place June 7-10, 2012, in Orlando, Fla. The scientific abstract submission deadline for the 2012 meeting is September 9, 2011.
