Algorithms Optimize Breast US Images

Warm bath ultrasound images.

April 14, 2010 - New algorithms for breast ultrasound (US) are making waves in the breast imaging community, which has led to a new arena of whole breast ultrasound technology.

At the American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine (AIUM) in San Diego, TechniScan cofounder, James Wiskin, Ph.D., presented novel methods in which 3-dimensional whole breast ultrasound captures anatomical images of the breast. The Warm Bath Ultrasound (WBU) system uses a combination of traditional B-mode (reflective) ultrasound and two types of transmission ultrasound speed of sound and attenuation of sound to produce three different sets of images.

According to Wiskin, the data WBU captures is not available with traditional reflection ultrasound or whole breast ultrasound. He added that the system can also capture 360 degree compounded coronal images. The system applies quantitative, high-resolution, speed of sound, and attenuation estimates to whole breast ultrasound. According to Wiskin, the technology has the potential to deliver new diagnostic tools to radiologists.
