March 2, 2010 — A provider of diagnostic imaging and healthcare IT solutions will demonstrate the benefits of a virtualized RIS/PACS environment using solutions from VMware, a virtualization technology, during HIMSS 2010.

"Agfa HealthCare's virtualized IMPAX solutions provide image management flexibility that is not available with traditional computing architectures," said Lenny J. Reznik, director of enterprise imaging and information at Agfa HealthCare. "Our customers are finding that they can lower costs and achieve greater levels of availability using VMware in the IMPAX environment."

IMPAX is Agfa HealthCare's integrated imaging and information management platform for streamlining clinical workflows and increasing caregiver productivity. Using WMware's ESX Server, IMPAX can be deployed on local and remote servers, enabling ready access to medical information and images.

The virtualized IMPAX environment can result in significant savings in IT investment and operating costs, compared to new hardware-based installations. Virtualization changes the way computing resources are deployed and managed by partitioning physical servers into virtual servers, each running a separate application and operating system.

The resulting highly efficient IT environment reduces infrastructure costs and manages planned and unplanned outages, with virtually no impact to users. For healthcare organizations, the result is a simpler and more cost-effective way to manage diagnostic images and radiology information.

Customized, turnkey IMPAX / VMware solutions provide healthcare organizations of any size with virtualization "building blocks," including hardware consolidation, high availability, business continuity and disaster recovery. Globally, more than fifty Agfa HealthCare customers are virtualizing their IMPAX systems using VMware's technology; nearly all of the company's PACS replacement and new customer PACS are being configured to run on VMware. In addition, IMPAX can be successfully integrated into existing VMware architectures.

Agfa HealthCare's virtualized IMPAX solutions are evaluated, designed and built by the company's professional services team and adhere to open standards and Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) frameworks.
