September 11, 2008 - For the fifth year, Siemens Healthcare (www.siemens.com/healthcare) presented the “New Point of View” Preclinical Image of the Year Awards, designed to demonstrate how Siemens preclinical imaging systems help researchers improve the quality of imaging and overall research, at the Siemens Preclinical User’s Group Meeting, held in Nice, France.

The awards are intended to honor pioneering researchers and their contributions. Advanced new imaging solutions and multimodal systems are shedding new light on dissecting disease processes and unlocking potential new treatments. Images were acquired on Siemens preclinical imaging systems: the Inveon preclinical scanner and the microPET (positron emission tomography) and microCAT (computed axial tomography) scanners, which have been long-time industry leaders.

“The ‘New Point of View’ image competition illustrates the breadth and novelty of applications for which preclinical imaging technologies are being used. The potential for breakthrough discoveries will eventually have impact in the clinical environment through translational research,” said Kirti Patel, vice president, Preclinical Solutions, Siemens Healthcare. “Our focus is to provide high-quality preclinical imaging tools and workflow solutions that will speed the discovery process for our customers.”

The “New Point of View” competition was open to anyone with a Siemens preclinical scanner. Researchers were allowed to use any type of radiopharmaceutical tracer or any other contrast material. Entries were judged on scientific merit, the type of information gleaned from the images and the overall quality of the images. All images were judged by a panel of industry experts and members of Siemens Preclinical Research and Development team.
