March 4, 2008 - Hologic demonstrated MammoSite at NCBC 2008, a targeted radiation therapy solution that works from the inside, using a higher daily dose for a shorter amount of time, five days instead of five to seven weeks.

The radiation source is placed inside the lumpectomy cavity, delivering radiation to the area where cancer is most likely to recur, and therapy is given on an outpatient basis, reportedly without requiring hospital stay.

The company will also highlight the newest features of the Selenia S digital mammography system, designed for the screening mammography facility or mobile environment. Selenia S uses the Hologic direct conversion detector, working to eliminate the need to convert X-rays to light.

The tungsten X-ray tube option for Selenia is a tungsten tube combined with a silver filter that allows images to be acquired at a lower dose, according to the company. Created for imaging thicker breasts with both lower dose and shorter exposure times to eliminate problems with patient motion.

Hologic is reportedly the first company to introduce the use of the silver filter with a tungsten tube in digital mammography. Systems shipped with the tungsten tube option will be calibrated to have a minimum of 30 percent reduction in dose, for a 4.5-centimeter breast, compared to Selenia/Molybdenum systems. Users have the option of choosing even lower dose settings, based on individual site preferences.
