Radiologists across seven health boards in New Zealand are going on strike today for equal pay with radiographers at other health boards.
Two hundred and sixty radiologists from the Association of Professionals and Executive Employees (APEX) radiographers union at the Bay of Plenty, Lakes, Tairawhiti, Hutt Valley, Canterbury, Otago and Southland health boards will be on strike today, and all but radiologists at Tairawhiti have two more one day strikes planned for next week. The current salary scale is $33,371 to $43,791 and APEX wants that raised to $37,188 to $49,875.
The two sides have reached an agreement on a pay scale of $42,000 to $57,000, but the one-year implementation requests by the union would be too costly. According to the union, they offered a two-year term which was also rejected.
"Doctors and nurses are paid the same base salary regardless of where they work in New Zealand, and the same should also be applied to radiographers,” said National Secretary Dr. Deborah Powell.
