April 4, 2008 - The Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) is offering an online educational session at 10 a.m. CST Thursday, April 24 to help clarify and demystify the HIPAA security audit, explaining how it works, the timeline and the selection process for audited organizations.

Tony Trenkle, with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Office of E-Health Standards and Services (OESS), will discuss the upcoming HIPAA security compliance audits to be conducted in the coming months. Trenkle will provide participants with actionable information to help make a thorough assessment of the risks and vulnerabilities to the confidentiality, integrity and availability of electronic protected health information (EPHI) in a healthcare organization.

“CMS wants to work with the industry and strike a balance between achieving information security and making sound business decisions,” Trenkle said.
