April 21, 2008 - CMS Inc., an Elekta Company, completed internal and external validation testing for its new Atlas-Based Autosegmentation solution and is applying to the FDA for 510(k) clearance to distribute CMS Atlas-Based Autosegmentation in the U.S. market.

The Atlas-Based Autosegmentation is a standalone software application that produces estimates of anatomy boundary contours needed to create a radiotherapy treatment plan. Designed with a reportedly easy-to-use interface, this program communicates with radiotherapy planning programs via DICOM-format data. Editing approximately correct contours takes less time than drawing them fully, giving the user more time to plan a treatment, said the company.

An atlas is an existing CT image with anatomy contours. Atlas-Based Autosegmentation uses deformable registration to match the atlas image to corresponding points in a novel patient image. The atlas contours are then mapped onto the patient using that deformation. Users are free to create new atlases or to modify existing atlases to contour patients spanning ranges of conformations and diagnoses. Atlases can even be patient-specific to contour images taken during the course of treatment.
