March 3, 2022 — The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) deplores the recent invasion of Ukraine that has resulted in the death and injury of a large number of innocent men, women, and children—a horrifying contrast to our work to save lives and improve patient care.

SNMMI’s mission is to improve human health by advancing nuclear medicine, molecular imaging and radionuclide therapy. Given our global scope, SNMMI leadership must express its grave concern about the rapidly deteriorating situation in Ukraine. Many more lives will be lost in the coming days and weeks unless a peaceful resolution of this conflict is rapidly secured. In addition, Ukraine has 15 nuclear reactors providing half the power to the country and houses the Chernobyl nuclear facility, which requires intensive environmental management for safety purposes. Among the civilians threatened by this invasion are the workers who keep these nuclear power plants and the Chernobyl nuclear facility safe.

For these nuclear workers, for the healthcare professionals delivering nuclear medicine and other services, and most importantly, for the safety and welfare of the Ukrainian people, SNMMI urges an immediate cessation of the invasion and occupation of Ukraine and strongly supports a rapid and peaceful resolution of this conflict.

Our thoughts are with all those affected by this crisis in the Ukraine and around the world.
