Online educational resource helps identify structures on CT scans, discusses patient eligibility

April 28, 2015 — The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) has introduced Low-Dose Computed Tomography (LDCT), an online education product designed to teach radiologic technologists LDCT screening techniques for patients with lung cancer. The module also provides guidance for radiology managers looking to provide reimbursable LDCT services to patients in the Medicare program.

The product was created in response to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ decision to cover lung cancer screening with LDCT for high-risk patients, including former and current smokers.

The module is worth one Category A continuing education credit and includes a summary of the procedure, how to recognize the differences between diagnostic and screening examinations and a guide to identifying the major structures seen on CT scans of the chest. Content of the course also covers the eligibility requirements for patients and imaging facilities to participate in Medicare's LDCT screening program.
