CDS tool delivers evidence-based guidelines and industry best practices to help physicians select appropriate imaging exam

ImageSmart, clinical decision support, CDS, Altarum Institute

August 5, 2015 — ImageSmart, a clinical decision support (CDS) tool from Altarum Institute, is effective in reducing unnecessary advanced diagnostic imaging tests that can put patients at risk and increase healthcare costs.

Created during a recent Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) grant-funded project, the overall program objectives focus on improving care by advancing decision support, reducing patient-induced demand, and leveraging provider accountability through reporting and feedback mechanisms. Program results are positive, demonstrating that providers who use the ImageSmart tool order a more appropriate test or an imaging alternative nearly 20 percent of the time.

ImageSmart is designed to fit seamlessly into the physician’s workflow and be easily accessible within the patient chart. Delivering up-to-date, evidenced-based guidelines from multiple professional societies, the software also supports physician decision-making with important information regarding industry best practices, relative radiation exposure and procedure cost. ImageSmart assists physicians as they work with patients to understand whether a particular imaging test is really necessary or effective or whether other care options should be considered.

ImageSmart has been certified for Allscripts TouchWorks EHR (electronic health record) and Allscripts Professional EHR.
