December 1, 2023 — The Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) announced that Elizabeth Morris, MD, has been selected as the SBI 2024 Gold Medalist. The Chair of Radiology and Professor at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, Morris was the Opening Plenary Session Lecturer at RSNA 2022, speaking on the important role of radiologists in working collaboratively and compassionately with patients to guide care. The announcement was made after SBI's Nov. 27 meeting, held during the Radiological Society of North America Scientific Sessions and Annual Meeting, RSNA 2023.

A summary of Morris’ background and commitment published by SBI in its weekly newsletter offered a look into the honoree’s distinguished record as a radiology and breast imaging leader. Graduating summa cum laude from UC Davis with a degree in Biochemistry, she received her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, and completed her residency at Weill Cornell Medical College. She also received a body/breast imaging fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she remained on the faculty until December 2020, becoming the Chief of the Breast Imaging Service and Larry Norton Endowed Chair.

A fellow of the American College of Radiology, Society of Breast Imaging, and International Society of MR in Medicine, and a past president of SBI, Morris is the inaugural Equity Diversity & Inclusion Officer of ISMRM and co-chair of Women of ISMRM.

Her research focuses on how to use newer techniques, such as MRI, for early breast cancer detection and to improve the workup of breast lesions, noted SBI. In collaboration with her colleagues, she has written over 230 papers, 40 chapters and 5 books about breast diseases with an emphasis on the use of MRI. She has lectured both nationally and internationally at over 320 conferences. She has mentored over 50 international research fellows and has received grants from NCI, DOD, RSNA, Komen Foundation and Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Morris will receive the Gold Medal during the 2024 SBI Breast Imaging Symposium during the April 12 President’s Dinner in Montreal, Canada.

Also during the SBI meeting on Nov. 27, seven members were inducted as Fellows of the Society of Breast Imaging. Additionally, SBI announced that it has named Tiffany Gowen the 2024 SBI Honorary Fellow Awardee. Gowen is Director, American College of Radiology ACR Commission on Patient- and Family-Centered Care, Lead Staff, Breast Cancer Screening Leaders Group.

As noted in the SBI News update, she received her Master's in health care administration from Purdue University Global and is currently a Public Health doctoral candidate at Capella University School of Nursing and Health Sciences. She serves on the board of the Cancer Action Coalition of Virginia and the White Ribbon Project. Gowen is a member of the American Cancer Society's National Lung and Breast Cancer Roundtables, and a co-founder of National Lung Cancer Screening Day. She is a fierce advocate for breast and lung cancer, screening, and equitable health care. She says that being a mom to her daughter Savannah and son Johnny is her favorite and most important job.

The mission of the Society of Breast Imaging is for members to be expert and authoritative breast imagers working in supportive practice environments who advance the highest quality of breast care via early detection, diagnosis, and treatment. Its vision is that breast breast cancer mortality and suffering is minimized for patients, their families, and society.
