Educational event conducted in partnership with IBA and OncoLink will help participants understand the applications and benefits of proton therapy and the considerations of opening and running a proton therapy center

Penn Medicine to Host Fourth Annual Proton Therapy Training Course

August 30, 2017 — IBA (Ion Beam Applications S.A.) and the Department of Radiation Oncology at Penn Medicine, in partnership with OncoLink, will present the Fourth Annual Course on Proton Therapy from Nov. 17-19, 2017, in Philadelphia.

This educational opportunity presents medical professionals and administrators interested in proton therapy with a three-day proton therapy immersion program at Penn Medicine. The fourth presentation of this course will focus on Inspiring Innovation to Transform Patient Care.

The course offers in-depth insights to the practical application of proton therapy for administrators, clinicians and medical physicists from cancer centers considering establishing proton therapy.

James Metz, M.D., chair, Penn Radiation Oncology and executive director, OncoLink said, “We are excited to offer this course for the fourth year. As the interest in proton therapy grows both nationally and internationally, Penn’s Roberts Proton Therapy Center continues to be a leader in providing education and training to help develop the next wave of experts in the field. We have been pioneers, both in regards to the technology and in building staff expertise, and we are pleased to showcase our Center and share our experience with the world.”

Anders Navrsted Pedersen, clinical director of the radiotherapy program at Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet) in Denmark, commented, "I attended the course in order to advise patients, refer patients, prepare comparison dose plans and prepare for proton therapy in my own center."

Sanford Katz, M.D., radiation oncologist at the Willis-Knighton Cancer Center in Shreveport, La., said, “I returned from the seminar with interesting new views which we now consider for our treatment planning and program. All the speakers were approachable and encouraged us to contact them in case of questions, which really gave the feeling that if you were to embark on this big journey, you become part of and are backed up by a community of like-minded peers.”

Target audiences for the course are radiation oncology physicians, physicists and administrators who are interested in learning about proton therapy. At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the logistics of establishing a proton therapy center with clinical and research capabilities;
  • Describe the current clinical indications and applications for proton therapy;
  • Comprehend the various technical considerations in proton therapy planning;
  • Explain the regulatory aspects of proton therapy planning and delivery from the standpoints of quality assurance and compliance; and
  • Better perform their specific roles within the proton therapy center
