April 18, 2024 — The American College of Radiology (ACR) Economics and Health Policy Department has selected William Donovan, MD, FACR, MPH, as the 2024 recipient of the William T. Thorwarth Jr., MD, Award. Dr. Donovan received the award at ACR 2024, the College’s annual meeting.

This honor recognizes individuals who demonstrate outstanding contributions to the field of health policy and economics for radiology.

“Dr. Donovan has served a pivotal role in helping to shape medical economics policy and mentored many ACR members on the American Medical Association (AMA)/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee,” said William Thorwarth Jr., MD, FACR, CEO of the ACR. “He is a consummate healthcare economics expert and absolutely deserving of this award.”

Donovan is a practicing neuroradiologist for Midstate Radiology Associates in Connecticut.

Donovan is a current member of the ACR Commission on Economics, Commission on General, Small, Emergency and/or Rural Practice, Coding and Nomenclature Committee, Quality Assurance Committee and Clinical Reviewer for the MRI Accreditation Program. He is a past chair of the ACR Neuroradiology, Reimbursement and College Nominating committees.

“Dr. Donovan’s commitment to healthcare economics throughout the years makes him an excellent choice to receive this award and I am honored to recognize him for his many accomplishments,” said Gregory Nicola, MD, FACR, chair of the ACR Commission on Economics.

Donovan began his career with the RUC in 2007 and in 2011 joined the AMA/RUC panel, first as the Alternate Radiology Member and then as Radiology Member from 2021 to 2024. Donovan’s commitment to the RUC has been recognized by many, including the American Medical Association.

The William T. Thorwarth Jr, MD, Award was established in 2004 by the ACR Commission on Economics to honor members or staff who show excellence in the field of economics and health policy by way of leadership, diplomacy and integrity. It is not an annual award but is given on a merit basis to outstanding individuals who deserve recognition for their efforts relating to economics and health policy.
