System allows more accurate diagnosis for Olympic team members

Korean National Training Center Installs Carestream OnSight 3D Extremity System

February 7, 2019 — Jincheon National Training Center in Jincheon, South Korea, installed a Carestream OnSight 3D Extremity System at its comprehensive training center for national athletes. The center has a total of 166,330 square meters of indoor and outdoor training facilities, and support facilities capable of accommodating about 1,150 people for a total of 37 sports events including athletics, baseball and swimming. It creates an environment where national athletes can focus on exercise in the best conditions. The center installed the OnSight 3D Extremity System, which uses cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to capture 2-D or 3-D cross-sectional images of bone or soft tissue in upper and lower extremities.

“The OnSight System provides the advantages of high-resolution, 3D X-ray images at a relatively low radiation dose,” said Jeong-Joong Yoon, M.D., Ph.D., of the Jincheon national training center sport clinic. “We have many cases of joint and extremity injuries during training. The OnSight system provides superb image quality of bone and even soft tissue with one scan, so it enables us to obtain an accurate diagnosis and begin treatment planning immediately. This system can also capture weight-bearing images, which makes it easier to see the nature of the injury as it appears when the patient is actually using extremity. This gives us a much better idea of the scope of the injury and how to treat it.”

Carestream Health designed the OnSight System to provide capabilities that are not possible with traditional X-ray exams. In summary, these include:

  • Upper and lower extremity exams, with high-resolution 3-D images to reveal subtle, difficult-to-detect fractures;
  • Weight-bearing exams that allow viewing of lower extremities under natural load;
  • Greater patient comfort and convenience, with a wide door opening for easy, step-in access; and
  • A reduced radiation dose compared to conventional CT systems.

“We believe the OnSight system improves the diagnosis and treatment of athletes at the Korea Olympic training center’s sport clinic and contributes to enhance care and performance of our athletes,” said Yoon.
