Barco’s Healthcare Displays Utilized in 2012 NFL Scouting Combine For Athletes’ Medical Evaluations

May 31, 2012 — Visualization and healthcare imaging company Barco partnered for a second year with Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital to supply its diagnostic and clinical displays for the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine. This year, Barco also integrated its automated quality assurance (QA) and calibration service, MediCal QAWeb, across the network of displays to further boost the consistency of captured images.

Top college football players gathered at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis in February to participate in the annual NFL Scouting Combine. Players went through an intense four-day job interview that included tests, screenings and drills designed to provide a comprehensive overview of on-the-field skills and health status. The result is a multi-faceted portrait of the athlete’s health status and capabilities, which team owners, executives and coaches use in preparation for the NFL Draft.

For the second year, Barco was the exclusive provider of healthcare imaging displays used by team physicians and radiologists to conduct player medical evaluations. In addition to supplying its Coronis Fusion 6MP DL widescreen color display systems and MDRC-2124 clinical review displays, Barco deployed its automated QA and calibration service to ensure mirror-image quality of radiographs across all displays. The MediCal QAWeb service operated continuously in the background, maintaining a consistently high level of contrast, luminance and DICOM calibration as evaluators viewed athletes’ magnetic resonance images (MRI), computed tomography (CT) scans, ultrasounds, nuclear imaging studies and cardiac evaluations.

“We provide the same high-quality Barco diagnostic medical displays for the NFL Combine physicians that are used in our hospitals. The addition of the MediCal QAWeb application to the setup has allowed us to provide an even higher level of quality and service by ensuring 100 percent image consistency and accuracy across all displays on the network,” said Dave Hennon, director, radiology and radiation oncology, Indiana University Health, the hospital’s technical liaison with the NFL Combine. “Radiologists and team personnel know that they’re looking at a consistent image on every display, which facilitates collaboration for better, faster decision-making when the stakes are high. Its ability to boost diagnostic confidence is just one of the reasons that we have deployed QAWeb with all of our Barco displays throughout our hospital.”
