ASE Launches Challenge to Foster Innovation in Cardiovascular Ultrasound Workflow

November 24, 2015 — The American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) announced today that it has launched the Echovation Challenge 2016, a competition for its members and the medical and scientific community at large to develop innovative solutions to improve workflow efficiency in cardiovascular ultrasound. The competition, funded and delivered by ASE on the HeroX platform, is designed to foster collaboration and develop creative ideas to drive innovation in the area of cardiovascular care.

Cardiovascular ultrasound, also known as echocardiography, has been a cornerstone of cardiac imaging for decades, providing a safe, radiation-free, and cost-effective method to diagnose many types of heart disease to help guide treatment and patient care. In recent years, there have been a multitude of technological innovations that have advanced the field considerably, and allowed for increasing levels of accuracy and detail. But in a healthcare environment where time is precious, it is often challenging to integrate new technologies and techniques into daily practice.

The purpose of Echovation Challenge 2016 is to foster and showcase novel approaches, technologies, and processes that have the capacity to enhance the workflow efficiency of cardiovascular ultrasound laboratories while maintaining excellence in patient care.

“While ASE has always been a great supporter of technological advances in cardiovascular ultrasound, we recognized the need to think bigger. The Echovation Challenge reflects the Society’s commitment to continually seek unique and innovative ways to drive change and improve patient care,” Susan Wiegers, M.D., ASE president and senior associate dean of faculty affairs at Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University.

The Echovation Challenge is open to all ASE members worldwide and the public at large, and the workflow efficiency solutions can be submitted by teams or individuals. A panel of echocardiography experts will select three finalists, who will be invited to present their solutions during a special session June 12, 2016, at ASE’s 27th Annual Scientific Sessions in Seattle, Wash. In addition to a cash prize and free 2017 ASE membership, the winners of this challenge will receive tremendous exposure and support from ASE in widely publicizing and recognizing their innovative work. Moreover, finalists who demonstrate novel ideas may receive mentoring assistance in developing and furthering their solutions.
